Pediatric Medical Awareness Conditions We Observe in September

Children's Medical Care is a Key Focus in September.

September is known for its many medical awareness observances, and many families and caregivers have marked their calendars to honor children with these medical conditions. Listed below are the September medical observances that hit home to Optimum Pediatrics.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Pediatric nursing care for children with cancer is something we provide everyday (and take very seriously).

Childhood Cancer is a devastating health issue that occurs all around the world. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, “cancer is a leading cause of death in children and adolescents.”

In September, those who wish to bring awareness to Childhood Cancer (or honor a child with cancer) will raise their golden ribbons --the internationally recognized symbol for the disease. Optimum Pediatrics will be doing this as it continuously strives to make life easier for the many children suffering from cancer in Georgia. Some of the care we provide these pediatric cancer patients include:

  • Preparing patients for treatment or surgery.

  • Drawing blood and other fluids for ongoing laboratory tests.

  • Feeding the patient and providing hygiene care.

  • Supporting patients through side effects of chemotherapy treatment.

  • Administering medication (orally, intravenously or rectally).

  • Dressing wounds and monitoring for infections to help prevent complications.

  • Checking vital signs, performing physical assessments, and documenting treatment details.

Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month

Children with Spinal Cord Injuries Need Special Care Given their Growing and Evolving Bodies. Children and adults suffering from spinal cord injuries have completely different treatment plans (both surgical and non-surgical).

Spinal cord injuries usually affect the brain and the body’s functions and our nurses are trained to support these patients with everything from ventilators and catheters to general hygiene and infection control.

Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) Awareness Month

Premature Baby In Home Nurse Care Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) Awareness Month was founded in 2014 by Project Sweet Peas, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness about challenges in the NICU as well as increasing resources for NICU’s nationwide.

Nursing care for medically fragile infants.

At Optimum Pediatric Services, our nurses care for premature babies and understand the fears and difficulties of caring for ill and underdeveloped infants. Our team helps parents navigate medical needs such as:

  • Enteral feeding

  • Respiratory and ventilator care

  • Medications and therapies

International Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day

Fetal Alcohol Nursing Care.

Many Optimum Pediatric Services nurses provide care for children affected by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, which can cause birth defects and developmental disorders in children. There’s no cure for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the physical defects and mental deficiencies typically last a lifetime.

However, early treatments and interventions may help prevent some of the disabilities that result from this syndrome –and this is where Optimum Pediatric Services can help. Regardless of the medical condition of your infant or child, our team of nurses can help with services such as:

  • Administering medication cautiously given the infant’s physiological condition.

  • Providing ventilation, feeding tube, catheter, and blood testing to support early-stage care.

  • Reinforcing learning and speech development through ongoing repetition and visual stimulation.

  • Perform regular physical and mental assessments for physicians/insurance purposes.

  • And so much more.

This day of awareness aims to educate women on the effects that alcohol consumption can have on a fetus. The awareness day is held on September 9 (9/9) every year to represent the nine months that a woman should avoid drinking alcohol.

National Care for Kids Day (September 20th)

The Designetics Cares Foundation is a nonprofit charitable foundation that created National Care for Kids Day, celebrated on September 20th every year.

National Care for Kids Day is relatively new, with the first observance being held on September 20, 2021.

The national observance celebrates children, and it spreads awareness on how people can positively impact the life of a child in need. The organization explains how reading a book to a child or teaching children about the arts or the sciences is a great way to give back and bring joy to children in need.

For us at Optimum Pediatric Services, every day is National Care for Kids Day! Our pediatric nurses have a deep passion for caregiving and bringing joy into the lives of children. Our nurses regularly help medically fragile children and their families with: To learn more about International National Care for Kids Day, visit Designetics Cares Foundation.

Medical awareness celebrations are positive ways to learn more about yourself, your loved ones, and others around you.
