With Halloween just around the corner, we want to give a special shoutout to a nonprofit that makes Halloween the best holiday ever! Magic Wheelchair builds incredible costumes for children in wheelchairs, and our OPS team is obsessed with this organization’s creativity, drive and commitment to making a difference in the lives of medically fragile children.

Magic Wheelchair obviously has great heart and passion for what they do, but you know what makes the nonprofit even more amazing? The costumes are built at no cost to families. That’s incredible!

The Inspiration and Success Behind Magic Wheelchair

It all started in 2008 when Ryan "The Dude" Weimer asked his son, Keaton, what he wanted to be for Halloween.

“A pirate,” said Keaton.

Keaton was diagnosed at nine months old with Spinal Muscular Atrophy and had just started using a wheelchair. As Ryan thought about Keaton’s response, he realized that he could turn Keaton’s wheelchair into an awesome pirate ship.

Now, Ryan and the Magic Wheelchair team “create unforgettable moments for children around the world by transforming their wheelchairs into magic.” This magic extends far beyond the Halloween holiday, though. The nonprofit also makes costumes for special events like Comic Con and other cosplay events.

At OPS, we admire and praise organizations like Magic Wheelchair that make a difference in the lives of medically fragile children. Check out some of their awesome work below, and make sure to check out the Magic Wheelchair website for more information about the great work they do!

More Ways To Celebrate Halloween with Medically Fragile Children

Last year, we wrote about many fun and safe Halloween activities that medically fragile children can participate in. We know that standard trick-or-treating is not always feasible for families with medically fragile children, and as nurses and caregiving experts, we want to offer some of our favorite alternatives that are just as fun as trick-or-treating!

Check out our Best Ways to Celebrate Halloween with Your Medically Fragile Child Without Trick-or-Treating blog to read about all the different ways your family can celebrate Halloween.

Happy Halloween from the OPS family!
