November Medical Awareness Observances that Honor Patients, Families, and Caregivers
Thanksgiving is the most notable celebration that occurs in November, but our family at Optimum Pediatrics understands that there is much more to pay attention to and celebrate this month, especially when it comes to medical awareness holidays and observations.
Many of our caregivers, families, and patients will be celebrated this month according to the list of national health observances detailed below. November is a unique month for medical awareness campaigns because some of these campaigns honor the importance of family support when it comes to health.
Take a look at the list below to learn about the medical awareness observances that Optimum Pediatrics will honor this November.
National Family Caregivers Month
National Family Caregiving Month Declared on Oct. 31, 2022 by President Biden
We know firsthand how important caregivers are to the medical community, and even more so, to families. As a professional team of caregivers and nurses, we support all the family caregivers out there, and we are so excited to see this awareness month become officially recognized.
Just in time for Thanksgiving, we’re thankful to see National Family Caregivers Month get the recognition that it deserves. Thank you to all the moms, dads, grandparents, siblings, and family members for taking on the role of caregiver! You are so appreciated.

National Epilepsy Awareness Month
Epilepsy caregivers working through a brain condition that is commonly known to cause seizures.
Many of our patients are affected by epilepsy, and we want to help raise awareness this month for this condition. In our experience, we have found that two common factors that could lead to an epilepsy diagnosis are congenital health conditions and preterm birth, which many of our #epilepsywarriors have experienced.
We want to give a special shoutout to the Epilepsy Foundation of America as they lead some of the largest national initiatives for National Epilepsy Awareness Month. Follow along with the foundation using the hashtag #MyNEAMAction to raise awareness for epilepsy and honor all the children and adults with the condition.
Prematurity Awareness Month and World Prematurity Day
Premature Caregiving: According to the CDC, 1 in 10 babies were born prematurely in the U.S. in 2021. Babies who are born prematurely are at a greater risk of death or developing a serious disability.
This November, the Optimum Pediatrics family is celebrating Prematurity Awareness Month and World Prematurity Day in honor of our patients who were born prematurely and battle medical conditions commonly associated with preterm birth.
Throughout the month, the Optimum Pediatrics family will make a nod to the color purple in honor of the campaign. We encourage every family affected by prematurity to celebrate Prematurity Awareness Month, and on November 17, to take special care in celebrating World Prematurity Day.
We also want to highlight the awesome work that March of Dimes is doing this month to honor both awareness holidays. The organization is encouraging followers to use the hashtag #WorldPreamturityDay on November 17 to spread awareness!
Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
Pancreatic cancer is rare in children, but according to the National Cancer Institute, there are four types of pancreatic tumors that children can develop.
Though pancreatic cancer more commonly affects adults, the condition can also affect children. In honor of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, we want to shed light on the four types of pancreatic cancers that children can fall victim to.

Pancreatoblastoma
Islet cell tumors
Pancreatic carcinoma
The Hirshberg Foundation is well known for its fight against pancreatic cancer. The Optimum Pediatrics family encourages anyone who wants to spread awareness for pancreatic cancer to follow along with the Hirshberg Foundation this month as the organization honors the fight against the disease.
National Family Health History Day
Proactive Caregiving: It’s never too late to learn about your family’s medical history and what it means for the future.
National Family Health History Day is celebrated on the same day as Thanksgiving each year. As caregivers and nurses in the medical community, we honor this medical awareness day.
Knowledge is something to be thankful for, and we believe that Thanksgiving is a great time to gain a better understanding of your family’s health history, especially if you will be spending time with loved ones. This can give you a better sense of how your health, child’s health, and future generations’ health could be impacted by hereditary medical conditions.
