November 17 is an important day for us at Optimum Pediatric Services, because today is World Prematurity Day. Today, we want to honor all of our patients who were born prematurely. At OPS, we care for many premature babies, and we also advocate for resources that help raise awareness for preterm births.
According to March of Dimes, 1 in 10 babies are born prematurely. Unfortunately, there are many health risks associated with preterm births, and on World Prematurity Day, we feel it is extremely important to discuss these risks and the best ways that mothers can avoid going into labor early.
The Risks Associated with Premature Births
Though many babies born prematurely live long and healthy lives, there are some who struggle with lifelong complications due to prematurity. Some of these conditions include, but are not limited to:
Cerebral palsy
Neurological disorders
Asthma
Hearing or vision problems
Though these conditions are challenging, a proper care and treatment plan can help premature babies who are struggling with these conditions to live happy and healthy lives.
Ways to Avoid a Premature Birth
We are unsure of what exactly causes premature births, but we do know that there are a few things that mothers can do to lower their chances of going into labor early.
Avoid smoking, drugs, and alcohol
Attend prenatal care checkups
Prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Discuss pre-existing chronic health conditions and current medication routines with a doctor
